The Perfect Family Photoshoot: Tips and Tricks for Parents

Family photographs are more than just pictures; they are cherished memories that capture the love, joy, and bond within a family.

As an experienced family photographer in Milton Keynes, I've had the privilege of capturing these special moments for many families. Today, I'd like to share some tips and tricks for parents to help ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and successful family photoshoot.

1. Choose the Right Photographer

The first step is to choose a photographer with a style you love. Research their portfolio, understand their approach, and ensure their style of photography resonates with you. Remember, every photographer has their unique way of capturing family dynamics, so it's crucial to find one that matches your family's personality.  If you’re here because you think I might the right photographer for you, please do go take a look at my gallery Here.  I’d love to chat about how I can help capture your family memories.

2. Plan Your Outfits

Choosing the right outfits is crucial for a great photoshoot. Avoid matching outfits exactly, but instead try to coordinate the colours and styles. This adds depth and interest to the photos. Comfort is also key. If you or your kids are uncomfortable in their clothes, it will show in the pictures!
Also, remember that if you’re going to be a shaded location it might be a bit colder than you think. It’s always best to have a cardigan or jumper planned just in case it’s needed.

3. Timing is Everything

The best time for a photoshoot depends on the age of your children. For younger children, schedule the shoot around their nap times to ensure they are well-rested and in a good mood. With older kids, consider their meal times and other daily routines. As the summer approaches and we have lovely light for longer in the evenings so I’m happy to work around school and at the weekends.
The best light for outdoor family photo shoots is as early in the morning or as late in the evening as possible to avoid the harsh midday sun. I know that isn’t always possible though and there’s ways or making all times of day work.

4. Location, Location, Location

Choose a location that holds a special meaning for your family, whether it's your home, a favourite park, or a beautiful outdoor location. Natural light is a photographer's best friend, so outdoor morning or late afternoon shoots can provide a beautiful, soft glow.
I love using Tattenhoe Valley Park with its mixture of play parks, green space, duck ponds and pretty bridges. If you’d prefer a walk in the woods, Howe Park Woods is another great location.

5. Keep It Fun

The best photos are those where everyone is relaxed and having fun. Bring along some props or toys, tell jokes, play games. As a family photographer, I always encourage families to interact with each other during the session as it allows me to capture genuine smiles and laughter.

6. Patience is Key

Photographing children requires patience. If your child needs a break, let them have one. If they're distracted by a bug or a flower, we'll go with it. Sometimes, these unplanned moments result in the best pictures.

7. Trust Your Photographer

Once you've chosen a photographer, trust them to guide the session. We're experienced in making clients feel comfortable in front of the camera and getting those perfect, natural shots.

8. Prepare Your Children

Talk to your children about the photoshoot. Explain what will happen and let them know it's fun and not something they need to worry about. Encourage them to be themselves and enjoy the experience.

9. Don't Forget to Be in The Photos

Often, one parent (usually the one organising the shoot) tends to try and stay out of the photos. Remember, these are family portraits, so it's important for everyone to be in them. Years down the line, your children will appreciate having photos with you in them.  In fact, the portraits with the whole family in them become treasured possessions.

10. Enjoy The Experience

Lastly, remember to enjoy the experience. Don't worry about every hair being in place or if your child is looking at the camera. Some of the best photos come from candid, real moments.

I hope this has helped you feel more relaxed and informed about how to choose you family photographer and how to make the most of your family photo shoot.

Time flies by so fast and family photos really are so special to look back on. My family had photos taken back when we were teenagers which I am so glad we have. We also got some updated ones in 2022 now there’s added neices and nephews and I know we will treasure those ones just as much in the future.
