How to include siblings in Newborn Photo Shoots

I’ve been a Milton Keynes Newborn Photographer for over 10 years and have seen every single type of older sibling there is.

  1. You get the siblings who want NOTHING to do with their baby brother or sister - they simply refuse to acknowledge they exist.

  2. The ones who accept the fact something has changed but aren’t really interested in being around them.

  3. The ones who are simply angry about the whole situation. Their life has been turned upside down, they’re not impressed and they’re going to tell you about it!

  4. Some are happy to have a little brother or sister. They’ll give them a little cuddle or perhaps a kiss. They’ll tell me their name and be a bit proud of the new member of their family.

  5. And lastly, the ones who LOVE their baby sibling. And I mean LOVE. They’ll cuddle them (maybe a little too tight…), want constant updates on what I’m doing throughout the shoot and will tell me ‘that’s my little brother/sister’ 300 times.

I’ve seen it all and I’ve photographed it all.

No matter their age or how they feel about the new arrival, there are lots of tips and tricks to get the sibling photos you dream of.

This simple pose is perfect for photographing young siblings and those who aren’t too sure of their little brother or sister.
I lay your newborn down and gently encourage them into the area. Maybe I can get them to point to their tummy, look at their nose or give them a little kiss on the head. If all else fails, I’ve been known to place a snack or sticker on the babie’s tummy and take a photo as they go to get it!

Laying down can sometimes be a bit tricky as some siblings think it means nap time and that’s a big no no!
If they are happy to lay down, it’s a great option for siblings who are too young to hold a baby. A little kiss on the head or a big smile to the camera and your heart will melt!

These are my go to poses for older siblings (as well as including the previous two positions) Newborns always look so tiny in their laps and that fact has made many parents tear up!

And let’s not forget including siblings in family photos as well. These are just as important.

When it comes to shoot day - the poses we get all depends on what your new baby and big brother or sister are happy with. As much as I am never above a bit of bribery - ultimately they are the boss!

As newborn photo shoots are quite long, once their photos are done some parents choose to drop siblings off with family or take them out for a couple of hours. That way mum gets to relax at the studio for a bit while I photograph your new arrival.
