Everything you could ever need to know about your Newborn Photo Shoot

If you're like me, you like to plan everything down to the detail.

I have check lists of things to take places, routes (and back up routes) of where I am going and will leave with enough time to spare that it's highly likely that I will be early.
I'd much rather sit in my car and wait for an appointment than worry about being late (or even worse, actually be late)

If you're even a little bit like me, then this blog is just for you.

The aim of this blog is to answer any question you may ever have about every stage of your newborn shoot - from booking to purchasing your images.

I first met the lovely Montgomery family back in 2015 when they were expecting their first son, George. We've done Maternity, Newborn, Christmas, 6 month & 1 year shoots together and it's been really great getting to know them and watching little George grow up.

When they got in touch to let me know they were expecting baby number 2 I was very excited! We discussed everything they wanted from this next newborn shoot and counted down the days till her arrival.

Logan's Newborn Photo Shoot | Hemel Hempstead

Logan's mum first got in touch about a month before her due date to book in her Newborn Photo Shoot. We discussed everything she liked and didn't like and booked her in for around a week after she was due.

Logan, it seems, had other plans though as he arrived almost 4 weeks early! He had to stay at Luton and Dunstable Hospital for around a month so we kept pushing his shoot date back until he was given the all clear and was able to go home.

Little Lottie came for her Newborn Shoot a few weeks ago in response to a Model Call a put out on my Facebook Page.

Model calls are when I ask parents to bring in their newborn baby for a free photo shoot so that I can perfect something before trying it with a paid client.
It might be that I want to practice a certain pose or try out new lighting. In Lottie's case I had a few new creative ideas that I wanted to try.

What to Wear to your Newborn Photo Shoot

A common question I get asked is - What should I wear to my newborn photo shoot?

Firstly, if you're not having photos taken you can wear what ever you like! You are very much very welcome in your pyjamas if that's what makes you happy. If anyone has anything negative to say about that, point to your newborn baby and carry on.

Spence's Newborn Photo Shoot | Hitchin

A few weeks ago I travelled to Spence's house in Hitchin for his Newborn Photo Shoot.

His mum had had a C-section and was unable to travel to me so I hopped in my car and went to them instead.
When I arrived, the house was nice and warm and ready for me to set up in their living room.

People always worry that their houses won't be big enough when I travel, but usually any living room space is fine. I may have to move a table or close a curtain but I'm pretty adaptable!

Little Enzo came from Edgware for his Newborn Photo Shoot when he was 15 days old.

When I can, I try and photograph babies between 5 & 10 days but if it doesn't work out like that, it's fine. The older the baby the less likely they will want to curl up and sleep but that doesn't mean we still can't get gorgeous photos!

Little Poppy came from Berkhamsted for her newborn shoot when she was 10 days old.

And when I say little, I really mean it. She was born at Luton & Dunstable Hospital at 35 weeks and weighed just 5.5lb.

She was the perfect little sleeper but my goodness did she like a good wriggle! I would get her into position, let her get comfy, and then we were good to go....until she decided it was time to wriggle again!

Eliana came for her newborn photo shoot when she was 7 days old.

Her mummy knew she was having a c-section so we were actually able to book her shoot in on a certain day and keep it there, which doesn't happen very often when you're working with unpredictable newborns!

With a full tummy and toasty warm room, my run of perfectly sleepy babies continued as she slept from beginning to end without any fuss.

Teddy came from Beaconsfield for his Newborn photo shoot when he was 8 days old. He had kept his family waiting an extra 5 days and they were very happy to finally meet him - especially his big sister Isla.

When Charlie & Alice's mum got in touch asking for Newborn Photography for twins I was very excited!
This is my 6th twin photo shoot and it's never any less special!

The twins arrived at 26 weeks and spent around 2 months in hospital before being allowed home. I got to meet them at at around 3 months old, at which point they still hadn't reached their due date!

Charlie was small and Alice even smaller but they were happy and healthy and ready to be photographed.

I was about 7 at the time, while he was 11 and best friends with my brother.
Alas it wasn't meant to be and he is now happily engaged and has just welcomed his second son, Kellen, into the world.

Toby & Jake live with their mum and dad a few doors down from our house. They love saying hello to Jess the dog, showing me whatever new toy they have or just telling me something random about their day.

For the majority of 2017, the big news was that they were about to become big brothers. And they were excited!

Sebastian's mum got in touch when he was 6 days old for a last minute Newborn Photo Shoot. I booked him in as quickly as I could and ended up taking his photos when he was just 14 days old.

The ideal time for a newborn to be photographed is between 5 & 10 days but I do offer posed photo shoots to babies up to three weeks. I might not get as many sleepy posed photos at 3 weeks but it all depends on the baby - some still sleep like a dream!

When Noah and his family arrived, we started with some simple parent photos.
You do not have to hold a naked baby if you're not interested in playing 'pee roulette'. Instead we can use a nice neutral blanket (or colourful, it's your choice!) and wrap your little one up nice and snug.

Rhea's family first got in touch when she was 2 weeks old.

As newborn shoots usually take place in a babies first 5 - 10 days, I booked them in nice and quickly so we could capture all those tiny details before she grew too much.
There was no need to worry about her being more alert though - she was the perfect sleepy baby for the majority of her photo shoot!

I have people travel to me from all over Herts, Beds & Bucks with their newborns, but when Rhea's dad got in touch, I realised they only lived a few streets away - nice and easy!

You're careful not to start buying things too early (you know, apart from that little outfit that you just couldn't leave behind) and you wait longingly for each scan to see that little face one more time and the reassurance that everything is a-ok.

Emily is one of the smiliest 2 month olds I have ever photographed!
