Top tips for preparing for your studio newborn photo shoot

I’ve been a newborn photographer for over 9 years so I understand that preparing for your newborn photo shoot can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help make the process a little easier, I've compiled a list of top tips for preparing for your newborn photography session.

  1. Schedule your photo shoot in advance: It's best to schedule your newborn photography session well in advance of your due date to ensure availability. I recommend scheduling the session during the first two weeks after birth but will work around your due date when you book.

  2. Feed your baby before the session: A full baby is a happy and sleepy baby, which makes the session much calmer and easier. Plan to feed your baby just before your session (that can be when you arrive if you like) to help ensure they are sleepy and content during the shoot. You also may have to feed them a little more often while you’re here.
Breast or bottle - all are welcome here.

  3. Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing: Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing to avoid any marks or indentations on their skin before the session. It will also be easier to undress them without waking them up when you arrive.

  4. Bring extra nappies and wipes: Because your baby will be moving around a little more and potentially will be feeding a little more, it’s a good idea to bring spare nappies and wipes to the session.

  5. Bring any special teddies or blankets: If you have any special items or blankets you'd like to use in the photos, be sure to bring them to the session. It's even better if you let me know in advance so I can have setups prepared.

  6. Choose outfits for yourselves and siblings: If you plan on being in the photos with your baby or bringing siblings along, choose outfits that complement each other and coordinate with your baby's outfit.

  7. Relax and enjoy the experience: Heading out to a newborn photo shoot can feel a little overwhelming when your little one is so new, but it's important to relax and enjoy the experience. Sit back and relax while I capture beautiful photos of your baby.

  8. Be patient: Newborn photography sessions can take time. I go at your baby’s pace to allow time for feeding, changing, and settling your baby during the session.

I hope this helps answer any worries you may have about coming for your newborn photo shoot. You’re more than welcome to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have.

I can’t wait to meet your family and capture beautiful images of your newborn!
